School Mural Brief

The Providence Hebrew Day School is located in (you guessed it) Providence, RI on a fairly busy street. It's a small school with a big personality, but you might not have noticed it if you were walking by. PHDS was looking for a school mural to bring some color to the building’s exterior to celebrate the joyful school community, communicate its most important values, and attract attention from passersby.

PHDS was in the midst of a rebranding process, and wanted to inject some color and a healthy dose of personality into their physical space. A school mural was the perfect way to do just that!

Since this school mural is located on the building's exterior wall closest to the playground, it was important that the mural be bright and playful, and not too serious.

The Inspiration

PHDS community members wanted to include the school's slogan, which is "passing the torch from generation to generation." Instead of going literal with an image of a torch, we came up with the visual metaphor of an adult hand passing flowers to a reaching child.

The result: a Jewish school mural that is whimsical and bright and also tells the story of the school’s dearly held values in a way that’s accessible for kids and adults alike.

"I am so impressed by both your concept creation and execution. It highlights the values of the school, while portraying the warmth that is the soul of the school… truly a masterpiece!!!"

Conclusion

Check out a reel of my painting process for this school mural! It was incredibly fun to paint, and I know the kids loved seeing it come to life.

School murals bring so much to the local community; not only do students enjoy seeing the art every day, but pedestrians and other community members learn more about the institution. An exterior school mural is a fantastic way to share important messaging and core values.
