A vibrant school mural that celebrates core values and promotes school pride.
Murals make a huge impact on a space, not just by adding color, but by helping tell our most important stories. I donated this mural to the Emma G Whiteknact Elementary School because murals:
⭐️ Help set the tone for school: How do you feel when you enter a space? Is it welcoming? Is it fun? Visual arts enhance the learning environment and grow positivity.
⭐️ Tell an important story: Think about the kinds of stories you want to tell at school! Murals incorporate diverse interests and experiences, and help people feel connected and included.
⭐️ Foster creativity and imagination: Color, shape, texture, and text all help to encourage kids to think creatively.
⭐️ Promote interaction: From involvement in the design process, to watching the installation, to experiencing the finished product, murals are interactive spaces for both students and teachers.
I worked closely with the school administration to design a mural that celebrated their core values, felt fun and bright, and instilled a sense of school pride. The school leadership wanted the mural to be in their multi-purpose room which serves as both cafeteria and gym, and hoped it would be a backdrop for school performances.
The Whiteknact team had two goals: celebrate school pride by including an anchor (their mascot!) and recognize the community's commitments to its core values of responsibility, pride, and respect. They wanted it to be fun and vibrant and something that elementary school kids would love.
We came up with a masonry style grid with different elements in a kid friendly style that would divide the room and add personality and color.
Check out this video of my painting process for this fun school mural! I had so much fun painting this school mural for Whiteknact Elementary, especially when a young student announced me over the PA system as part of his morning announcements.
I love painting school murals because the kids are always so curious, and it’s just pure fun. The kids had a million questions about drawing, art supplies, and working as an artist. I was on-site for 2.5 days, and I was smack dab in the middle of the gym/cafeteria. One girl told me I “ate and left no crumbs,” which may well be the best compliment I've ever received!
