A welcome desk mural that infuses local character and personality
I grew up going to the Jewish Community Center, both for after school programs, swimming lessons, and later to the fitness center. I remember going and seeing my grandfather walking on the treadmill!
The JCC staff was looking to add a bit of local flavor to the space while also making the welcome desk seem a bit more ... welcoming! The JCC is very clean and professional, but seemed to be lacking a little bit of its character, and staff were looking for a way to punch up the volume. They wanted the mural to say "welcome" in both Hebrew and English, and were also hoping for something specific that would tie this community center to Rhode Island. Rhode Islanders are very proud of our tiny state!
As I mentioned, Rhode Islanders are very proud of our tiny state. RI pride is often expressed through ocean themes, but we had another idea: local wildflowers!
After extensive research, we selected quite a few local plants, including: Bracken Fern, New England Aster, Evening Primrose, Swamp Rose Mallow, Butterfly Milkweed, Sundial Lupine, Plymouth Rose-Gentian, Sea Lavender, and Wild Indigo.
Check out the video of my painting process for this fun welcome desk mural!
This welcome desk mural helped bring local charm and color to an otherwise gray wall. Everyone walking by said they were so happy to have some cheerful color! I infused the space with a spirit of welcoming and uplifted some very special native plants.
