A synagogue mural commemorating the 200th anniversary of the founding of B'nai Jeshurun in New York.
B'nai Jeshurun, a Jewish congregation that was founded in 1825, commissioned several artists to paint murals throughout a central stairwell as part of their 200th anniversary celebration. They wanted to lift up the community's central values through a series of murals. It's truly a fabulous way for any organization to express its core values and messaging.
The main sanctuary at B'nai Jeshurun is covered in stunning mosaics, and it is clear that the community values art, color, and vibrancy.
The brief was largely open ended in terms of visuals. The synagogue leadership wanted to really highlight their community covenant, a beautiful document that clearly explains the synagogue's commitments and dearest values. They hoped to bring the covenant to life through synagogue murals.
I was particularly inspired by several of the values included in B'nai Jeshurun's community covenant, especially:
I immediately thought of a song I cherish, Rabbi Menachem Creditor's beautiful interpretation of Psalm 89. I have listened to it over many years, and I find it to be so moving and truly healing. I sang it to my son when he was an infant, and now he plays it on the piano.
The verse from Psalms highlights B'nai Jeshurun's values and speaks to their commitment to Jewish text, Jewish community, and to the world at large.
Check out the timelapse of my painting process for this bold synagogue mural! It was incredibly fun to paint, if not a little scary on the stairwell ladder!
It was truly an honor and a pleasure to be a part of B’nai Jeshurun’s 200th anniversary celebration! Adding art and beautifying their building is such an incredible investment and celebration. Thanks so much for having me! May you celebrate another 200 years in beauty and color.
